PROPOSAL TO A RESEARCH PROGRAM OF THE CELTIC INFLUENCE IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE

This proposal is intended to set up a university research program on the Celtic language influence into the English language evolution. The main goal is to evaluate how much is this influence using a new methodology and the new computational tools as Artificial Intelligence in this area.

Historical Background

Normally, it is believed that the English language is mainly based on the Latin language combined with the Saxon and Nordman languages. Beside this apriorism, it is necessary to be aware of the first population in the British Islands, the Celts. They had, and still have, their own languages, therefore we would like to start a new research in this historical background. Combining the Celtic languages with the Roman and Germanic ones resulted in a new different language in the Medieval Centuries, namely as we know today as English.

New Research Program

University could start a research program in Etymology matters. This program will set up a transversal team involving different scholars well versed in these languages, also specialists in new methods and tools like AI. In this way we are able to track the connections during the early Centuries and a whole approach around the old and the future evolution of the English language.

Perspectives

This proposal is focused on bringing back the Celtic languages as a primary milestone in University studies. So we have a new research area and a general approach of the languages in the Western Europe and their specific combination in each land.
