Looking at internet, I have found a map of Wales, Cymru, where it was showing the name of Môr IwerDdon. That’s the profound sea at the west of the country. In English is translated as Irish Sea. As far as I understand it’s a toponym about “Iwer” related to the west. Then I was shocked with the phonetic similarity with “iler”, and especially with “iber”. If our name “iler” distinguishes the “ilergetes” people from the “indigetes”, how is it wonder that “iwer” is so similar to the names of the people who have been living at the Mediterranean coast of the Peninsula? In my view Indigetes, with indi- root, are placed at East. It is believed that they are in the East, by far the most important thing it just depends on the point of view of the observer. For Greeks and Romans, the Iberian Peninsula is completely set on the West of their world or belly center.
When we are talking about “Ibers”, it’s said that the name of this people comes from the name of the river Ebre. This name it’s written with an initial h, “hiberus”, in Latin. Nevertheless, you could see the phonetic linking with “iler”, and also with “iwer”, like in Welsh language it’s related to the West.
The real question is about which West we are talking of? Firstly, if it is West of the Mediterranean Sea, we would refer to all of Occidental Europe. What’s more, nearer to the meaning of the Ebre river, I suggest that the river goes upwards to the West, with a little leaning towards North. The key issue here is if the Ebre is leading us to the West, so it is taking its name from this cardinal point.
So to sum up, this evidence let’s understand that the Iber population are also Celtic or Gaelic people, extended at the Mediterranean West, or if you wish, at the Peninsular East. The vast majority of the scholars want to distinguish them from the Celtic population of the inner areas, because they were less prosperous and developed than the people of the Mediterranean coast.
So let me get straight, the geography of the country gives the real name for a place. So meaning is linked to the landscape, overthrowing the different interpretations. People belong to their land. There are no big holes between the Iberian Peninsula and the rest of West Europe. All of these lands were inhabited by Celtic or Gaul people. So there is a common background, which can push into language evolution later on. The Celtic language had become part of the Romance languages in West Europe.
